Dr. Caroline Wang und Robin Fay erhalten den IHK-Preis für herausragende wissenschaftliche Arbeiten an der Uni Siegen.

Die eine hat sich mit den Investitionen deutscher Unternehmen in China beschäftigt, der andere mit neuen Verfahren zur Authentifikation. Gemeinsam haben Dr. Caroline Wang und Robin Fay eines: Mit ihren wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten an der Universität Siegen haben sie Herausragendes geleistet. Dafür erhielten Dr. rer. pol. Caroline Wang und Master of Science Robin Fay den 30. Preis der Industrie- und Handelskammer Siegen (IHK).

Der mit 4000 Euro dotierte und in diesem Jahr von der Vetter Krantechnik GmbH (Siegen) gestiftete IHK-Preis zeichnet die beste Dissertation und die beste praxisorientierte Masterarbeit des akademischen Jahres in den Bereichen Architektur, Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Wirtschaftsinformatik, Wirtschaftsrecht oder Natur- und Ingenieurwissenschaften der Universität Siegen aus. Auf dem Programm der Preisverleihung stand außerdem der Festvortrag von Prof. Dr. Dr. Björn Niehaves (Universität Siegen) über „Do-it-yourself-Innovativen und andere ‚Katastrophen‘“.

IHK-Präsident Felix G. Hensel, Preisstifter Klaus Th. Vetter und Prof. Dr. Peter Haring Bolívar, Prorektor für Forschung und wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs, überreichten die Preise. Die Auszeichnung unterstreicht die besondere Beziehung von Wirtschaft und Universität sowie das Interesse der heimischen Unternehmen an einer praxisorientierten Forschung. Felix G. Hensel: „Durch den Preis wollen wir einen kleinen Beitrag für eine noch engere Verzahnung von Universität und regionaler Wirtschaft leisten. Schließlich sind wir überzeugt, dass Hochschule und Unternehmen sich gegenseitig befruchten können.“ Prof. Dr. Haring Bolívar betonte die Bedeutung der Zusammenarbeit: „Wir möchten globales Wissen lokal zur Verfügung stellen, Motor für Innovation und Fortschritt sein und damit regionale Akteure mit aktivieren. Für Entwicklungsprozesse und innovative Produkte, von denen die Region lebt, braucht es fundamentale neue Ideen, um langfristig erfolgreich zu sein.“

Dr. Caroline Wang erhält den Preis für die Dissertation „Deutsche Direktinvestitionen in der Volksrepublik China – Eine empirische Analyse über das Direktinvestitionsverhalten deutscher Unternehmen in China“, die sie an der Fakultät III Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Wirtschaftsinformatik und Wirtschaftsrecht geschrieben hat. Bewertet wurde die Arbeit von Prof. Dr. Jan Franke-Viebach (Professur für Außenwirtschaftstheorie und –politik) sowie dem zweiten Gutachter, Dr. Ralf Runde. Benotet wurde sie mit „magna cum laude“. Gegenstand der Dissertation ist die Analyse deutscher Direktinvestitionen in China bezogen auf die Entwicklung sowie auf zukünftige geplante Direktinvestitionstätigkeiten deutscher Firmen.

Auch die Arbeit von Robin Fay verfügt über hohen praktischen Nutzwert und wurde dafür mit dem Preis für die beste Masterarbeit ausgezeichnet. Sie entstand an der Fakultät IV, Department Elektrotechnik und Informatik, und trägt den Titel „Analyse von alignmentunabhängigen Feature-Extraction Verfahren in der Finger- und Venenbiometrie“. In der Arbeit widmet sich Robin Fay der Frage, inwieweit neue Methoden der Bildverarbeitung und der „Content Based Authentication“ für die Biometrie genutzt werden können. Betreut wurde die Arbeit von Prof. Dr. Karl Christoph Ruland und wurde mit der Note „Sehr gut“ (1,0) bewertet. Die Gesamtnote der Master-Prüfung beträgt „Sehr gut“ (1,2).

Die Kommission für Forschung und wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchs der Universität Siegen hatte der Jury unter Leitung des IHK-Präsidenten Felix G. Hensel vier Arbeiten aus dem Jahr 2014 zur Preisverleihung vorgeschlagen. Die prämierten Arbeiten von Caroline Wang und Robin Fay zeichnen sich neben besonderer Anwendungsbezogenheit durch hohe Wissenschaftlichkeit aus und sind ein Beispiel für eine praxisbezogene Forschung und für entsprechenden Technologietransfer von der Hochschule in die Wirtschaft.
