Biology Extended Essay Exemplars Problem

                                                 Evaluating the Extended Essay

This page is a set of resources essential to all students and their supervisors in understanding how to work together to maximize the number of points possible on the rubric for the Extended Essay.  The site includes the following sections that both students and supervisors will need: rubrics for each extended essay subject, IBO evaluator comments in each subject area, sample extended essays, and instructions for supervisors to grade both the rough draft and final draft of the essay.
Section 1: Class of 2018 - 2025 UAIS Generated Rubrics: The following 2018 rubric is not officially IBO released but superimpose the official IBO general rubric, unpacking of the criterion, and advise for students from IBO to students regardless of subject.  You will also see a supplemental subject handout that is taken directly from the IBO site. The two together will assist the student in approaching the essay.  Please note that the English supplemental handout only reflects category 1 and 2 as UAIS IBO chosen curriculum does not utitlize category 3.

Section 2: IBO Evaluator Comments--What the IBO Examiners Say About Essays in Every Area: In each of the following reports, Extended Essay graders point out common problems in each section of the rubric in each subject area.  It is essential that both the supervising teacher and the student discuss the following pitfalls that students frequently make and be sure that they discuss how to avoid these errors in an effort to maximize these points.

Section 3: Exemplars-The following are sample Extended Essays that received A grades in all of the various subject areas, unless otherwise noted in the download (Spanish, French, and Theatre are exceptions and received lower scores).  Students can use these as models for how to form style and structure for the various sections of their own Extended Essay as they write their drafts. Focus on the content as the format is not accurate per the new IBO requirements.
Section 4: Instructions for Supervisors: In this section, teachers will find all required rubrics and instructions to conduct meetings with students.

New Curriculum Exemplars and Commentary Feedback:

The following are released marks from IBO examiners for some of the essay exemplars. It should be noted that the scores are built into the title (i.e. 4 - 28 means scored 4 out of 28 points).  EXEMPLARS REFLECT ALL LEVEL OUTCOMES FROM LOW TO HIGH MARKS. These should provide insight into the grading process for your EEs.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) online curriculum centre (OCC), a key resource for educators at IB World Schools, includes several examples of extended essay titles.

These highlight the diverse range of topics covered by International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) students during their extended essays.

Some examples are:

  • “An analysis of costume as a source for understanding the inner life of the character”
  • “A study of malnourished children in Indonesia and the extent of their recovery after a period of supervised improved nutrition.”
  • “Doing versus being: language and reality in the Mimamsa school of Indian philosophy.”
  • “The effects of sugar-free chewing gum on the pH of saliva in the mouth after a meal.”
  • “To what extent has the fall in the exchange rate of the US dollar affected the tourist industry in Carmel, California?”
  •  “What level of data compression in music files is acceptable to the human ear?”

Also available in the OCC, the Handbook of Procedures for the Diploma Programme has guidance on choosing a subject for the extended essay.

The OCC is only available to existing IB World Schools.

You can also purchase examples of essays in the IB Store. These essays fulfil the requirements for an ‘A’ grade in the extended essay.

If your school is not one already, learn how to become an IB World School in order to implement the DP.
